7 Ways Littlefinger made Sansa miserable (Game of Thrones)

Littlefinger may profess his creepy love for Cat Sansa but it does not negate the fact that he is responsible for much of the misery Sansa has experienced in her young life (and countless other lives in Westeros, lbr). As Littlefinger appears to be Sansa's close advisor as Lady of Winterfell, let us look back at the seven times he seriously messed up her life.

1. Littlefinger lied about who owned the dagger that almost killed Bran and injured Cat.

With Ned and Catelyn desperate to know who tried to murder young Bran, Littlefinger told them he owned the dagger until he lost it to Tyrion Lannister. The Starks and the Lannisters were not exactly friends. When Catelyn encountered Tyrion at an inn, she had him seized and took him to the Eyrie. News of his brother's capture reached Jaime, who challenged Ned on the streets of Kingslanding and almost killed him. War between the Starks and the Lannisters eventually broke out, which the Starks lost, at least for a while.

2. Littlefinger betrayed Ned.

Littlefinger needed the support of the Gold Cloaks to put forth his plan to put Stannnis on the Iron Throne, following the death of King Robert and his discovery that Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen were products of Cersei and Jaime's incestuous relationship. Littlefinger had the Gold Cloaks in his pocket; he was the one paying them. Littlefinger betrayed Ned to the Lannisters and caused him to be imprisoned and later, executed.

In the ASOIAF books, it was implied that it was Littlefinger who persuaded Joffrey to behead Ned Stark. Initially, Cersei had managed to prevail on her son to send Ned to the Wall to take the black. Ned was going to leave Kingslanding but at the last moment, Joffrey decided to take his head instead. You can read more about this theory here.

3. Littlefinger scuppered the planned marriage between Sansa and Loras.

We know that Sansa would not have had a fairy tale ending with Loras, but Sansa had a chance at a quiet, comfortable life at Highgarden. Yes, Highgarden is a ruin now, defeated by Jaime's forces, but back then, Highgarden was the palace of Sansa's dreams. Sansa would not have been forced to marry Tyrion (a good man, but not one whom Sansa loved) nor would she have been dragged in the mess following Joffrey's death.

4. It likely was Littlefinger who chose to involve Sansa in Joffrey's murder.

Ser Dontos gave Sansa the necklace that contained the poison. Poisoning Joffrey may have been Olenna Tyrell's plan, but it was not necessary to have Sansa bring the poison into the banquet. Littlefinger wanted Sansa. He wanted Sansa to not have any option but to rely on him completely. Wanted for accessory to murder, her husband Tyrion already in jail, Sansa had no choice but to go to the Eyrie with Littlefinger and to be compliant with whatever his plans were, at least for a time.

5. Littlefinger gave Sansa to the Boltons.

This is a big one. Note that Littlefinger did not tell Sansa of his plan for her to marry Ramsay Bolton until they were almost North. He did not want her to have a chance to think the plan through thoroughly and figure a way out of it. Yes, Littlefinger told Sansa that they would return to the Eyrie if that was what she wanted, but by that time, they had already travelled a long way. The lords of the Vale and their soldiers followed Littlefinger, not Sansa. As Sansa told Littlefinger when they later met, if Littlefinger did not know what Ramsay was, then he was an idiot. If he knew what Ramsay was, then he was an enemy.

6. Littlefinger caused strife between Sansa and Arya.

Littlefinger manipulated Arya into finding the letter Sansa wrote to Robb back in the first season. Even then, Robb and Maester Luwin knew that, though Sansa may have penned the letter, the words were Cersei's. Arya did not know this, however. What she could see was a betrayal by Sansa, a sister she was never close to. As of this writing, we do not yet know if Littlefinger was actually succeeding in manipulating the Stark sisters, or if Sansa and Arya were playing one of the best players in the Seven Kingdoms.

7. Littlefinger killed Jon Arryn, which started the War of the Five Kings.

Littlefinger had Lysa Arryn poison her husband, who was King Robert's Hand. It was the reason King Robert went to Winterfell to persuade his boyhood friend Ned to serve as his Hand. Lysa, again at Littlefinger's urging, wrote to Catelyn and told her sister her husband was murdered by the Lannisters. If not for Littlefinger's actions, Ned would have remained in Winterfell, and Sansa would not have found herself in the hands of the Lannisters.
